Super Light Shore Jigging (SLSJ) Guide|Recommended YAMAGA Blanks Rods & How to Choose

Several years ago, we published a feature on SLSJ (Super Light Shore Jigging).

Since the article continues to attract many readers, we have thoroughly reviewed the content and updated it to reflect our current rod lineup.

Super Light Shore Jigging is an accessible yet highly engaging style of fishing that uses light tackle and lightweight metal jigs to target a wide variety of species.

However, there are no universally defined boundaries between Super Light Shore Jigging, Light Shore Jigging, and Shore Jigging. The tackle setups and jig-weight ranges associated with each style also vary among anglers and manufacturers.

In this updated feature, we first outline how YAMAGA Blanks defines these categories, then explain the performance we look for in an SLSJ rod, recommend models from our current lineup, and show how to choose between them.

SLSJ / LSJ / SJ Categories

Using jig weight and PE line as the main benchmarks, YAMAGA Blanks classifies each category as follows.

Category Jig Weight PE Line
SLSJSuper Light Shore Jigging
Approx. 5–25g PE 0.4–0.8
LSJLight Shore Jigging
Approx. 25–50g PE 0.8–1.5
SJShore Jigging
50g and above PE 1.5 and above

In practice, the boundaries between these categories will shift depending on the target species, field, current, rod, and other conditions. Please use the ranges above as general benchmarks when visualizing an appropriate tackle setup.

In this article, we focus on SLSJ (Super Light Shore Jigging), using metal jigs of approximately 5–25g with PE 0.4–0.8 line.

Criteria for Selecting an SLSJ Rod

For an SLSJ rod that can cover a wide range of situations, we placed particular emphasis on the following three points.

Versatility Across Different Jig Actions

From actively working a metal jig with rod input to covering water with a steady retrieve, the rod should provide the control needed to handle a wide variety of jig actions.

Enough Power for a Wide Range of Targets

The rod should have enough power to handle not only rockfish and flatfish, but also pelagic species that move through the area.

The Light, Agile Feel Unique to Light Tackle

The rod should maintain the light and agile balance expected of a light-game setup, reducing fatigue during repeated casting and jig manipulation while keeping SLSJ easy and enjoyable.

Based on the criteria above, we have selected recommended SLSJ models from the current YAMAGA Blanks lineup.

Even among rods suited to SLSJ, each model differs in its ideal jig weights, fields, handling characteristics, and ability to deal with different targets.
